'A love song for Bobby Long'

Young women, or maybe still a girl, named Purslane (Scarlet Johansson) received an information about her mother’s death. She decided to go on her funeral to New Orlean.

When she arrived to the town she found out that in her mother’s house there were living two men. She wanted to move into this special house too. The only problem is that those men didn’t even think about leaving that place. So Purslane moved into the house and started to live with them. At the beginnig it was wery difficult. The girl couldn’t communicate with her roommates, because she thought that their only goal was drinknig. The truth was that men’s lives weren’t so simple as you could think at first. The older of them, Bobby (John Travolta), had been an English teacher some time ago and the second one, Lawson (Gabriel Macht), had been his helper. Their lives were really hard, but you could find out why by watching the movie.

So, those three people were living together and after some time they started to understand and to help each other. They found out some secrets from the past and learned a lot of things about themselves.

This in one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. It’s different from the typical Amercian films. “A love song for Bobby Long” makes you wonder about some important parts of live.

Golf

Golf is a very relaxing and enjoyable sport because you can spend time In natural surroundings but it is also one that requires great skills. Learning how to play golf takes a long time so you need a lot of patience. It’s also a rather expensive sport because the equipment costs a lot of money and prices at golf courses can be very high. On the other hand, roller-blading is an exciting sport and is easy to learn. It’s fast and fun and keeps you fit cause you have to use all your muscles. It’s also cheap when you only can buy second-hand helmet and pair of roller-blades. However, roller-blading can be a dangerous sport as you might lose your balance and hurt yourself.

Pablo Picasso

On 25 October 1881 a little boy was born In Malaga, Spain. It was difficult birth and to help him breathe cigar smoke was blown into his nose. But despite being the youngest ever smoker this baby grew up to be one of the 20th century’s greatest painters – Pablo Picasso. Picasso showed his truly exceptional talent from a very young age. His first word was lapiz (Spanish for pencil) and he learned to draw before he could talk. He was the only son in the family and very good-looking so he was thoroughly spoilt. He hated school and often refused to go unless his doting parents allowed him to take one of his father’s pet pigeons with him. Apart from pigeons his great love was art and when in 1891 his father who was an amateur artist got job as a drawing teacher at a college, Pablo went with him to the college. He often watched his father paint and sometimes was allowed to help. One evening his father was painting a picture of their pigeons when he had to leave the room. He returned to find that Pablo had completed the picture and it was so amazingly beautiful and lifelike that he gave his son his own palette and brushes and never painted again. Pablo was just 13. From then onwards there was no stopping him. Many people realized that he was a genius but he disappointed those who wanted him to become a traditional painter. He was always breaking the rules of artistic tradition and shocked the public with his strange and powerful pictures. He is probably best known for his Cubist pictures which used only simple geometric shapes. His paintings of were often made up of triangles and squares with their features in the wrong place. His work changed our ideas about art and to millions of people modern art means the work of Picasso. Guernica which he painted in 1937 records the bombing of that little Basque town during the Spanish Civil War and is undisputedly one of the masterpieces of modern painting. Picasso created over 6,000 paintings drawing and sculptures. Today a ‘Picasso’ costs several million pounds. Once ehen the French Minister of Culture was visiting Picasso the artist accidentally spilt some paint on the Minister’s trousers. Picasso apologized and wanted to pay for them to be cleaned but minister said ‘Non! Please, Monsieur Picasso, just sign my trousers!’. Picasso died of heart failure during an attack of influenza in 1973.

"Old" Star Wars

The trilogy is a classic tale of The fight between good and evil. However instead of happening on earth, the action takes place “…a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.” It involves not only humans but all sorts of frightening and sometimes amusing robots and alien creatures. The heroes of the trilogy are Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia, who work together to fight Darth Vader, the evil leader who wants o take over the universe. Excellent performances are given by stars Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Alec Guinness and Mark Hamill, but the special effects play a bigger role than any of the actors. There are amazing space battles and gigantic fighting robots with laser weapons. You’ll certainly enjoy the incredible chases on floating motorbikes. You will also be fascinated by some of the strangest creatures you’ve ever seen in completely convincing alien landscapes. George Lucas says: “When I made the original Star Wars I was very interested in creating a modern myth. Greek mythology of mythology from any country, often takes place in an unknown area… and the only area we have now which is like that is outer space.” With this fantastic trilogy Lucas has certainly succeeded in creating a myth that will never be forgotten.

Cleopatra VII

Although Clepatra VII was the last Queen of Egipt, she was actually Macedonian. She became well for her charm, intelligence and incredible ambition. Cleopatra first became queen after her father died in 51 BC, leaving her and her brother, Ptolemy, in charge of the kingdom. Soon after this she was accused to trying to kill her brother. She then started a civil war. At the same tome, Julius Caesar, the emperor of Rome, fell in love with her and helped her to take control of Egypt. Cleopatra stayed with him in Rome until he was murdered in 44 BC. Seven years later, the Roman general, Marcus Antonious, fell in love wit her. Soon they married and had three sons. Together they wanted to take over the Roman Empire. The result was a huge battle in 31 BC between their armies and those of Octavian, Caesar’s son at Actium. After losing the battle, they both returned to Alexandria, where they killed themselves.

Small shops vs. Supermarkets

In the past few years countless small shops hale been forced to close because of the changes in public shopping habits and the increasing popularity of supermarkets. But do the benefits of supermarkets really outweigh those of small local shops? We cannot deny that supermarkets do have certain advantages. Firstly they provide a wide variety of goods at unbeatably low prices. Furthermore they create jobs for a greate number of people thus helping to reduce unemployment. In addition to this they are ideal for those shoppers who do not have time to visit more than one shop in order to do their weekly shopping. On the other hand the small local shop offers certain benefits that supermarkets will never be able to offer their customers. Due to their size small shops fit into residential areas easily making them more convenient in the case of ‘emergency’ shopping. Moreover they generally stay open later than supermarkets. Finally supermarkets will never be able to beat your local shopkeeper when it comes to friendly service.

Collecting

At some point in our childhood most of us collected something either it was chewing gum stickers of stamps. Who can deny the thrill they felt on finding an object which completed their collection after weeks of searching? It is therefore not difficult to under stand why some people continue to collect objects into their adult years. People collect all kinds of things from beer mats to valuable works of art. For some it is simple a way of spending the time, while others see it as a wise way to spend their money. After all there are some who discover that their seemingly humble collections are actually worth a lot of money. What may be a fascinating collection for one person though may be quite dull and uninteresting for another. Visitors to the Hanley museum in Stoke-on-Trent might wonder at the interest that led a local millionaire to collect china cows. He donated a large amount of money to the museum no condition that the cows would be displayed alongside pieces of valuable antique porcelain. Why others may not always understand a collector’s passion these people continue to feel that their hobby is worthwhile and very satisfying.

The Greenhouse Effects

Gases pollute the atmosphere because they are produced too quickly to be cleared away naturally by rain, winds or plant life. These poisonous gases came from several sources such as oil producers, industries which burn fuel and motor vehicles. When the gases are released they have two harmful effects. First, some of the gases are caught by rain clouds and fall as acid rain which damages the environment. Secondly increasing amounts of carbon dioxide forms a cover over the earth keeping the heat of the sun close to the earth’s surface just as a greenhouse keeps heat in. The increase in carbon dioxide is worse by the cutting down of forests. Trees use carbon dioxide and the fewar trees there are the more of this gas remains in the air. The USA and Europe are now leading an international effort to limit deforestation. In 1996 Washington set goals for industry and several international agreements have already been effective in reducing the production of harmful gases. Only international cooperative can deal with this problem which if not controlled may threaten all life on earth.

Valentine's Day

Many countries celebrate Valentine’s Day on February 14th . This modern-day holiday is a celebration of love which gets its name from a Roman priest, Valentine, who secretly performed wedding ceremonies for Christian couples in the 3rd century. Weeks before the fourteenth of February shop windows are decorated with red paper hearts, red streamers and boxes of chocolates. Heart-shaped cakes and sweets are baked and gifts such as perfume and jewellery are promoted by department stores. Red roses are ordered from florists, dinner reservations are made and presents are bought in preparation for Valentine’s Day. Even cards and small gifts are made by young children at school. On Valentine’s Day many people wear something red since it is considered to be the colour of love. Gifts, wrapped in shiny paper and red ribbons are exchanged women receive bouquets of flowers and people express their feelings to their loved ones. In the evening many couples choose to dine at romantic restaurants while others enjoy spending time together at home.
